"Death of a Prominent Physician. The people of this section of the country, and the medical profession in particular, will be pained to learn of the death of Salisbury's eminent physician, Dr. Marcellus Whitehead, who breathed his last at his home in that place at 7 o'clock last Friday evening. He had long been a sufferer from Bright's disease, which was the cause of his death. Dr. Whitehead's learning and skill had made for him an extensive reputation, and his practice was by no means confined to Rowan county, as he was frequently called upon to attend cases in different sections of the State. His popularity as a citizen was scarcely excelled by his popularity as a physician, and yesterday all the business houses in Salisbury were draped in respect to his memory. The citizens of Salisbury look upon his loss as an irreparable one, and the medical fraternity of North Carolina has been robbed of a useful and an eminent member."

He was licensed as a Methodist preacher in 1853.

Rev. Paul Whitehead and Virgilia Minerva Timberlake were married on December 8, 1857 in Albemarle County, Virginia.

They lived at Methodist College in Murfreesboro, Hertford County, North Carolina on June 1, 1870. The enumeration date was the first day of the census, June 1 1870. Paul's family was listed in one household with everyone in the Methodist College. His family consisted of:

  • Jennet [Janet] S. Whitehead, 7, female, born in VA.

  • Virgilia Whitehead, 4, female, born in VA.

Silas, Jennet [Janet] and Virgilia are assumed to be Paul and Virgilia's children. There is a long list of names included in the same dwelling and household, who were students and teachers at the Methodist College.

They lived at High Street in Farmville, Prince Edward, Virginia on June 1, 1880. Like in 1870, Paul's family is listed in the 1880 census with people that taught at or attended the female college where Paul was president. Enumeration day was June 3, 1880 and Paul's family consisted of:

  • Paul Whitehead, 49, Head, married, President Female College, born in VA, parents born in VA.

Paul was born in September 1830, 69, married for 43 years, born in VA, parents born in VA, Minister, unemployed for 0 months, and could read and write. Virgilia M. was born in November 1832, 67, married for 43 years, 3 children born, 1 child living, born in VA, parents born in VA, and could read and write.

He was named in the obituary of Thomas Whitehead Sr. that appeared in the Richmond Times newspaper on July 5, 1901 in Richmond, Virginia.

Paul died after an illness of 6 weeks on April 3, 1907 at the age of 76 at St. Luke's Hospital in Richmond (City), Virginia. He was buried on April 4, 1907 at Maplewood Cemetery in Charlottesville, Charlottesville (City), Virginia.

Paul had several obituaries. One obituary appeared on April 4, 1907 in the Baltimore Sun newspaper in Baltimore, Maryland.

"REV. DR. WHITEHEAD DEAD. Prominent Virginia Methodist Minister Passes Away. [Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.] Richmond, Va., April 3.--Rev. Dr. Paul Whitehead, 76 years old, for many years one of the most prominent presiding elders in the Virginia Conference, died at St. Luke's Hospital this morning after an illness of six weeks. His death was not unexpected, although his many friends here hoped that he would be able to be out again. The body was taken to Charlottesville this afternoon, where the funeral will take place at noon tomorrow. Rev. D. R. Stuart, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Charlottesville, will conduct the services.

Dr. Whitehead is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Virginia [Virgilia] Whitehead, wife of Dr. Richard Whitehead, dean of the medical faculty of the University of Virginia. His wife died 12 years ago.

Rev. Dr. Whitehead was born in 1830 in Holson [Nelson] county. He and a twin brother were the youngest children of John and Anna Whitehead. He was licensed to preach in 1853, and began his ministry in Lynchburg in the very church in which he was converted. In December, 1857, he married Miss Virginia [Virgilia] H. Timberlake, of Albemarle county. He was a trustee of Randolph-Macon College. In 1876 he was commissioned by the Governor a visitor to the University of Virginia. The degree of doctor of divinity was conferred upon him by Randolph-Macon College in 1875. He was a member of the Virginia Methodist Episcopal Conference for 50 years. He had been a presiding elder for the last 15 years, holding charges in the Lynchburg, Norfolk and Richmond districts. He was returned to each of these charges by the conference more than once."

Another obituary appeared on April 4, 1907 in the Richmond Times Dispatch newspaper in Richmond (City), Virginia. This was another extensive obituary, like the one written about his brother, Thomas, in the same newspaper in 1901. It said he died at 7:45 AM on April 3 at St. Luke's Hospital, and at his bedside were Dr. and Mrs. [his daughter, Virgilia] Richard Whitehead of Charlottesville, Miss Nellie Whitehead [his niece] of Richmond, and other loved ones. Paul's body was taken to Charlottesville on April 3, to lie in state in the university chapel until noon on April 4, followed by an extensive funeral attended by many Methodist clergymen.

The obituary said Paul was a twin brother to Silas, and the youngest children of John and Anna Whitehead. He was educated at an academy near New Glasgow, Amherst County, but both he and Silas had to drop out due to his father's "financial pressure". He and Silas joined the Methodist Church in 1849. He obtained a law license in 1853, but never practiced law. In August 1853, he was licensed to preach in the Methodist Church. Within a 6-month period in 1857, he lost his father, mother, and twin brother, but married Miss Virgilia M. Timberlake of Amherst County.

The obituary went on to state that he was president of Wesleyan Female College in Murfreesboro, North Carolina until 1873, when he left that college and opened the Farmville College for Young Ladies at Farmville, Virginia. In 1881 he was appointed presiding elder of the Petersburg District, serving in that capacity until he died. He received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1875. At the last Methodist Conference he attended in 1906, his colleagues presented his with a loving cup signifying his contribution as secretary of the Conference since 1860 - 46 years.

Paul’s wife, Virgilia Minerva Timberlake, was born on November 16, 1832 in Fluvanna County, Virginia. She died on October 13, 1905 at the age of 72 in Lynchburg (City), Virginia and was buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Charlottesville, Charlottesville (City), Virginia.

Paul Whitehead and Virgilia Minerva Timberlake had the following children:

i. Silas Cary Whitehead was born on November 12, 1859 in Virginia. He died on May 2, 1898 at the age of 38 and was buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Charlottesville, Charlottesville (City), Virginia. Silas ever married.

ii. Janet Laurie "Janette" Whitehead was born on August 29, 1862 in Albemarle County, Virginia. She died on April 2, 1887 at the age of 24 in Salisbury, North Carolina and was buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Charlottesville, Charlottesville (City), Virginia. Janet never married.

iii. Virgilia Whitehead, born May 1, 1866, Virginia; married Dr. Richard H. Whitehead (her first cousin), June 4, 1891; died September 24, 1953, Charlottesville, Virginia.
