| My grandfather, Zack Todd, taken sometime in the late 1910's |
This is a post about my maternal grandparents, Zachary Taylor Todd and Mamie Virginia Leitch. It was generated using RootsMagic v7.5.5 Narrative Report feature.
Zachary Taylor "Zack" TODD was born on November 9, 1897 in Hampton, Elizabeth City County, VA to Benjamin Franklin Todd and Cora Mater Todd. Although I have found information supporting Zack's birth date in 1898 (some censuses and his WWI draft registration), other information such as his death certificate and the closest census to his birth (1900) support him being born in Nov 1897.
He was listed as a member of Benjamin Franklin TODD and Cora L. MATER's household in the census on June 6, 1900 in Wythe District, Elizabeth City County, VA along with Florence "Flossie" TODD and Floyd Benjamin TODD. The census said he was Benjamin and Cora's son, 2 years old and born in Nov 1897 in Virginia.
Zachary was injured and broke his left arm on May 18, 1908 in Hampton, VA. He was 10 years old at the time. The article in the Daily Press newspaper was titled "Boy Breaks His Arm", and went on to say: "Master Zack Todd, the ten year old son of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Todd, broke his left arm between the wrist and elbow, while playing with several companions at the West End High School yesterday afternoon. Dr. D. H. Worthington set the broken bone and made the little fellow as comfortable as circumstances would admit of."
He was listed as a member of Benjamin Franklin TODD and Cora L. MATER's household in the census on May 11, 1910 in Wythe District, Elizabeth City County, VA along with Emmett D. TODD Sr., Florence "Flossie" TODD, Floyd Benjamin TODD, Herbert Elias TODD, and William Franklin TODD. In the census, his name was Zachariah and he was listed as Benjamin and Cora's son. He was 12 years old, born in Virginia, and had attended school.
He was in the Fitter's Department at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company in Newport News, VA from May 18, 1915 to 1962. My grandmother saved an article from around the time he retired in 1962 from the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company bulletin. At the time of the article, he had been working there for about 47 years. When he retired, he was a Supervisor of Ship Fitters, Department X11. He had worked on ships like the United States and several aircraft carriers. I remember my grandmother telling me he always got paid in silver dollars from the Shipyard. In fact, I still have an 1879 silver dollar that he gave me when I was about 12 years old.
He lived at 2609 Oak Avenue in Newport News, VA in 1917. Zack was listed in the 1917 city directory as Zachariah, which matched his name from the 1910 census. This must have been his residence when he first started working at the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company. His occupation in the city directory was apprentice. He was not in the 1916 Newport News/Hampton city directory, so he likely started working for the Shipyard in 1917.
Zack registered for the World War I draft on September 12, 1918 in Newport News, Warwick County, VA. He gave and signed his name as Zackary Todd. His birth date was listed as Nov 9 1898, which was a year later than his actual birth date. Don't know why this date would be wrong. The registration information stated he worked as a ship fitter for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. His nearest relative was his father, Benjamin F. Todd, residing at R.F.D. #2 in Hampton, VA. He was of medium height, stout build, with brown eyes and brown hair. There was nothing indicated that would physically disqualify him from service.
He lived at 222 46th Street in Newport News, Warwick County, VA when he registered for the WWI draft on September 12, 1918. This address would be the same address given in the 1920 census for Zack. Located between Washington Avenue and Huntington Avenue, this was the location for a number of apartments used by shipyard workers.
He lived at 222 46th Street in Newport News, VA in 1920. His name was listed as Zachariah in the city directory, and his occupation was ship fitter.
Zack appeared in the census on January 6, 1920 at 222 46th Street in Newport News, Warwick County, VA. He was listed in the census as Jack Todd, 21 years old and working as a shipfitter in the Shipyard. He was boarding with Mrs Ware (widowed) and the Coleman family.
He appeared in the census as the head of the household on April 1, 1940 at 60 Locust Avenue in Wythe District, Elizabeth City County, VA along with Mamie Virginia LEITCH, Janet Elinor TODD, and Rita Kay "Kay" TODD. Zack (41, born in Virginia) and his wife, Mamie (33, born in Virginia) were living with their daughters, Janet (my Mom, 6, born in Virginia) and Kay (1, born in Virginia). They were living in a house they owned worth $4300. They lived in the same house in 1935. Zack had an 8th grade education. His occupation was a Supervisor at the Shipyard, for which he worked 40 hours the last week in March 1940, and 52 weeks in 1939. He was paid $2750 in 1939 for this job, and had no income from other sources.
He registered for the WWII draft registration for men aged 18-44 in 1942 . On his draft registration form, Zack's age was 45, his date of birth was given as 9 Nov 1897 with birthplace as Elizabeth City County, VA. He resided in Hampton, Elizabeth City County, VA at the time of the draft, and worked for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. His physical description was 5'11", 200 lbs, light complexion with gray eyes and brown hair. His next of kin was his wife, Mamie V. Todd.
Zack was living in Hampton, VA on March 10, 1954 according to his mother Cora Mater Todd's obituary.
He lived at 60 Locust Avenue in Hampton, VA when he retired from the Shipyard in 1962.

He lived at 60 Locust Avenue in Hampton, VA until he passed away on November 29, 1973. My Mom said her parents bought that house around 1936. For about the last 6 months of his life, Zack was a patient at the Eastern State Hospital. This information came from his death certificate and my own personal knowledge.
Zack died from congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation on November 29, 1973 at the age of 76 at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, James City County, VA. Death occurred at 2:27 am. The atrial fibrillation started 7 days before his death and the congestive heart failure started 2 days before his death. No autopsy was performed. He also suffered from dementia, which was one reason he was in Eastern State Hospital. The informants on his death certificate were the Eastern State Hospital Medical Records, Williamsburg, VA and the Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News, VA.
His obituary appeared on November 30, 1973 in the Daily Press newspaper in Newport News, VA. The obituary read: "Entered Into Eternal Rest Thursday, Nov. 29, 1973, Zack Todd. Zack T. Todd of Hampton; five brothers, Floyd Todd, Franklin Todd, Emmitt Todd, Herbert Todd and Carroll Todd, all of Hampton, and eight grandchildren." (His obituary did not mention anything about calling hours, a memorial service, or burial plans.)
He was buried at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA within a few days of his death. Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News, VA was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Zachary Taylor "Zack" TODD and Mamie Virginia
LEITCH were married on March 2, 1926 in Norfolk, VA. My grandmother once told
me that she and Zack were going to Washington, DC for their honeymoon and
planning to stay with his Aunt Kate (Catherine Mater). However, when they were ready to leave it was
snowing, so they spent their honeymoon in the Hampton Roads area. (I have
searched Virginia, District of Columbia and North Carolina marriage records on
various genealogy websites, such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org, for
their marriage certificate, but haven't been able to find it yet. This is the
date I've always been told was their marriage date.)

was born on February 25, 1906 in Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, VA. Although
I have found information in other censuses that imply Mamie's birth year was

it matches her age from the 1910 census, which was the census closest to her
birth.

She lived at 60 Locust Avenue in Hampton, VA until 1976. The house was originally bought sometime around 1936, which fits with the city directories from that period. Whenever I'd spend time with her and Granddad in the summer, I always stayed in the room on the second floor, which was my uncle Ronny's old room.

Family anecdote: Places Mamie lived, from an email my Mom sent to me. "As for mother she lived with me after she sold 60 Locust on Ivy Farms Road; then she moved to Township Apartments in Hampton by the church, Ivy Memorial. There they had a Hawaiian Day and mother dressed up in her Hawaiian outfit she had bought in Hawaii and was the belle of the ball that day. Those ladies in the office just gave her a lot of attention. The mailman was her special friend and brought her the mail to her door. Then she moved by herself still to where she and Ronny ended up - at that time they were called Foxcroft Apartments - and she lived right across from Kay and Bob, thinking they would look out for her. But as you know, she ended up looking out for Kay. She left there the day Kay passed away and never went back. She stayed with me for a while and then she went with Ronny when he got the house on Thames Drive. He wanted to live there so Jason could go to Bethel High School. Mother lived with him until the owner rented it to his own son and then they got the place in Kensington Square Apartments (old Foxcroft) and she lived there until she passed away. I think she also lived in Northampton Townhouses, but got out of that with a doctor's note that the stairs in the townhome were bad for her. She liked to move around and my dad was the opposite; he wanted to stay put. Very fascinating stuff!
