“YESTERDAY marked the passing of two Virginians for many years prominent in the political life of the Commonwealth and both with honored service in the General Assembly of Virginia-Thomas Whitehead [Jr.], 78, of Amherst and Morgan R. Mills, 71, of Richmond.

Both Messrs. Whitehead and Mills were men of strong conviction and both left their impress at Richmond in faithful service for the State they loved so much.

Thomas Whitehead [Jr.], from one of Virginia's most distinguished families, a brother of the late John Whitehead of Norfolk and of Mrs. Henry D. Perkins of Norfolk, served not only as a member of the House from his native county of Amherst but later served as an assistant attorney-general of Virginia in charge of enforcement during the early days of Virginia prohibition.

Morgan Mills was a legislative contemporary at Richmond with our own former Senator Samuel T. Montague and the late John A. Lesner of Norfolk. Elected first to the State Senate nearly 40 years ago, Senator Mills was defeated by the Byrd political forces but came back as a "stalwart of old" in 1935 and was an honored member of the upper house of the General Assembly until his death.

Both Messrs. Whitehead and Mills were stalwarts of the Martin-Daniels school of Virginia politics and both were long in the political confidence of those who led in Virginia in days gone by.”
