Narrative Report for William G. Mater

William G. Mater was one of my Mom's paternal great uncles.

1.  William Garrett Mater12 was born on February 21, 1879 in Elizabeth City County, Virginia.14

He was listed as a member of William Henry Mater and Hannah J. "Jennie" Topping's household in the census on June 14, 1880 at a farm in Wythe District, Elizabeth City County, Virginia along with Carrie B. Mater, Catherine T. "Cate" Mater, Cora L. Mater, and Lucy Mater.1 William G., their son, was 2 years old and born in Virginia.

He appeared in the census on May 3, 1910 at North Newport News Section in Newport News District, Warwick County, Virginia.3 William was the head of the family, 31 years old, and married to Mary for 7 years. He was born in VA and both parents were born in PA [note: mother should be VA]. He worked for wages as a carpenter for shipyard and bridge works. He was not out of work and had spent 0 weeks in 1909 out of work. He couldn't read or write [?], and the family lived in a rented house.

William appeared in the census on February 18, 1920 at 77 Main Street in Hilton Village, Warwick County, Virginia.4 William was listed as "Gracott Mader". The famiy lived in a rented house. He was the head of household, 40 years old, married to Mary, could read and write, was born in VA, both parents born in VA [father was born in PA], and worked for wages as a shipfitter at a shipyard.

He appeared in the census on April 9, 1930 at 338 43rd Street in Newport News City, Warwick County, Virginia.5 The family lived in a house rented for $15 a month. William was the head of household, 50 years old, married at age 24, could read and write, born in VA, both parents born in VA [father was born in PA], employed as a carpenter working on his own account, and not a veteran.

He died from carcinoma of the bladder on January 29, 1948 at the age of 68 at home in Newport News City, Warwick County, Virginia.2 On his death certificate, William's birth date was Feb 21, 1879 and birthplace was Elizabeth City County, VA. He was 68 years old and married. The informant on the death certificate was his wife, Mrs. W. G. Mater of 305 33rd Street, Newport News. His occupation was "Retired" with no industry listed. William's parents were W. H. Mater, born in Pennsylvania, and Hannah J. Topping, born in Virginia.

Burial was planned for Jan 31, 1948 at Greenlawn Cemetery, but I can't read the name of the funeral director. Another ancestor of mine, Dr. Lee B. Todd, signed as the registrar on Feb 5, 1948.

William's doctor, E. Greenspan, MD of Newport News, treated him from Sep 1946 until he passed away on Jan 29, 1948. No autopsy was planned.

William was buried on January 31, 1948 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Newport News, Virginia.2 William Garrett Mater and Mary Anne "Annie" Apsley68 were married circa 1903.35

They lived at 305 33rd Street in Newport News City, Warwick County, Virginia until January 29, 1948.2




Mary Anne "Annie" Apsley was born circa 1886 in Virginia.911

She appeared in the census on May 3, 1910 at North Newport News Section in Newport News District, Warwick County, Virginia.9 Mary was the wife of William G. Mater, 24 years old, married for 7 years, 4 children born, 4 children living, born in VA, father born in MD, mother born in VA, no occupation, could read and write.

Annie appeared in the census on April 9, 1930 at 338 43rd Street in Newport News City, Warwick County, Virginia.11 She was the wife of William G. Mater, 44 years old, married at 17, could read and write, born in VA, parents born in VA, no occupation.

She was the informant on the death certificate of William Garrett Mater on January 29, 1948.2


 William Garrett Mater and Mary Anne Apsley had the following children:

He appeared in the census on February 18, 1920 at 77 Main Street in Hilton Village, Warwick County, Virginia.17 He was Gracott Mader's (William Garrett Mater's) son, 8 years old,  attended school, could read and write, born in VA, parents born in VA, no occupation.

He appeared in the census on April 9, 1930 at 338 43rd Street in Newport News City, Warwick County, Virginia.18 He was the son of William G. Mater, 19 years old, single, could read and write, born in VA, parents born in VA, employed for wages as a pipe cover [not sure if this is right] in a shipyard.

          7            vi   Mary Anne Mater1920 was born circa 1915 in Virginia.1920

She appeared in the census on February 18, 1920 at 77 Main Street in Hilton Village, Warwick County, Virginia.19

She appeared in the census on April 9, 1930 at 338 43rd Street in Newport News City, Warwick County, Virginia.20 She was incorrectly identifed as Rosaliah Mater, which was crossed out and Mary Anne Mater was entered. She was the daughter of William G. Mater, 25 years old [she should be 15 years old, which was crossed out with 25 written in - looks like the enumerator got confused between her and her sister Rosaliah, who would be 25 but was married and living in another household], could read and write, born in VA, parents born in VA, no occupation.

          8           vii   John H. Mater was born circa 1920 in Virginia.21

He appeared in the census on April 9, 1930 at 338 43rd Street in Newport News City, Warwick County, Virginia.21 He was the son of William G. Mater, 10 years old, attended school, born in VA, parents born in VA.

He was living in Newport News, Virginia on April 28, 1974.22

          9          viii   Edith J. Mater was born circa 1923 in Virginia.23

She appeared in the census on April 9, 1930 at 338 43rd Street in Newport News City, Warwick County, Virginia.23 She was the daughter of William G. Mater, 7 years old, attended school, born in VA, parents born in VA.
